Honest Honey Grading
Quality of Tualang Honey is measured by Total Activity, Pollen Count and Pollen Variety.
TOTAL ACTIVITY
Tualang Honey is well known for its strong anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation and anti-oxidant ability, which is tested for its bioactivity via Total Activity or TA rating, similar to the UMF/MGO rating commonly used for Manuka Honey.
Total Activity is a combination of Peroxide Activity (PA) [1] and Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA) [2], which measures anti-bacterial activity generated by different chemical processes. Total Activity of Tualang Honey contains approximately 30% PA and 70% NPA; whereas nearly all Total Activity of Manuka Honey is NPA only. Honey with a TA greater than 10+ is classified as medical grade honey with beneficial antimicrobial properties. The higher the TA rating the greater the anti-bacterial strength.
Health Harvest’s Tualang Honey is tested for TA in the Minerva laboratory located in Derby, United Kingdom with reported
TA 9.5+ to 14+.

POLLEN COUNT
Pollen is very important for honeybee nutrition. Honeybees collect pollen grains from entomophilous and anemophilous plants to obtain protein for their survival and reproduction. Researches indicate that bee pollen has at least 18 vitamins, 22 amino acids, 25 minerals, 59 trace elements, 25% protein, 11 carbohydrates, 14 fatty acids and 11 enzymes. Its rich content of carotenes is 50% more proteins than beef, being an excellent vegetarian protein food source for it has more amino acids than dairy products, meats and eggs.
Tualang Honey originates from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, which contains high density of diversified rainforest pollen grains, being 20 - 65 times over other medicinal honey and commercial honey.
In the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, Indonesia, Apis Dorsata collects pollen grains from hundreds varieties of primitive rainforest plant flowers. Tualang Honey is a typical multi-floral honey because there is no predominant pollen type in Tualang Honey.
We performed Absolute Pollen Counts [3] over Health Harvest’s Tualang Honey samples, which contain 2,400,000 to 6,500,000 pollen grains per 10 grams honey.

POLLEN VARIETY
In the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, Indonesia, Apis Dorsata collects pollen grains from hundreds varieties of primitive rainforest plant flowers. Tualang Honey is a typical multi-floral honey because there is no predominant pollen type in Tualang Honey.
We performed analysis of rainforest pollen varieties of Health Harvest's Tualang Honey via microscope with more than 100 to 200 pollen varieties identified.

Notes:
[1] Peroxide Activity (PA) results from a reaction between an enzyme placed in the honey by the bees called Glucose Oxidase and glucose. This reaction, which starts when the honey is diluted, results in the gradual production of a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide is a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent when operating in conjunction with honey’s other antiseptic properties, but is gentle on human tissue and the digestive system.
[2] Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA) is a measurement of active chemical inside Manuka Honey – Methylglyoxal (MGO). The MGO forms over time in the honey from the interaction of a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which originates from the nectar of the Manuka flower, and other naturally-occurring proteins and amino acids in the honey.
[3] Absolute Pollen Counts (APC) is a pollen analysis method recommended by the International Commission for Bee Botany. Ten grams of each honey was dissolved in 20 ml of warm water (40°C). The solution was centrifuged for 10 min at 2500 r/min, the supernatant solution was decanted, and the sediments were collected into a conical tube and treated with an acetolysis mixture (acetic anhydride : conc. sulphuric acid = 9∶1 V/V) for approximately 30 min at room temperature. After treatment with the acetolysis mixture, the sediments were rinsed with distilled water, centrifuged for 5 min at 2500 r/min, and preserved for study. The APC of the honey sample (i.e., the number of pollen grains per 10g honey) were calculated with a haemocytometer. Pollen grains were counted under a microscope at 100X magnification over a haemocytometer (counting chamber). The chamber is 0.1 mm high and has 25 medium squares of 0.04 mm2 each, which are subdivided into 16 small squares of 0.0025 mm2 each. This means a volume of 0.1 µl in the chamber, 0.004 µl in each medium square and 0.00025 µl in each small one. For each sample, we counted the pollen grains of five medium squares at the center, left and right corners at the top and bottom of the chamber, which was repeated for making 100 individual observations. Based on the average number of 100 observations, the absolute pollen counts in the volume of 100 µl suspension with the pollen sediment contained in 10g honey were calculated.
